#86 top-grossing, Productivity
Store ratings include star-only taps from in-app prompts, which skew high. The peak and recent figures come only from people who wrote a review, which skews low. Compare each against itself: the drop is the signal, and a big gap between the two usually means heavy rating prompting is masking unhappy users.

Not working with my iPhone 14
It won’t let me make a account a It keeps saying error and retry and it won’t work
With the app getting the upgrade to Support liquid glass and iOS 27, users with voiceover can no longer navigate to the delete button in the email. They’ve got to find the three horizontal dots activate that menu and then use the gestures to find the move to trash option. The liquid glass menu bar is not accessible anymore. Oddly enough when you’re looking at the inbox, it’s unfortunate that there’s no options to be able to swipe up and down for users of voiceover to select an email for deletion and delete it directly from the inbox like you can on the native iOS mail app.
You cannot ever recover your password
On iPad Pro M4 2025 version. Crashes frequently when opening up mail. Yes, I’m on latest version.
Proton mail talks a big game about protecting user privacy, but best I can tell that’s a lie. They advertise that they don’t collect person information and thus couldn’t share it or use it improperly even if they wanted to. That’s not true. If you sign up for a new account, and then use it for anything online, they will ban your entire account until you give them your personal information. False advertising from an untrustworthy company. You might as well use something from one of the Big Tech companies. Proton seems no different. You won't get any real privacy with them.
Continues to be useless somehow.
New phone/computer? No email?
Randomly filtered a critical message to “Newsletters” for the first time for that sender and ruined my day. I’ve disabled “Categories” but I’m still angry.
It’s currently impossible to create a new free account because every username is registered as taken. This bug is also on their desktop version so it’s not app specific. Forget this and just use Outlook like everyone else does.
I paid $47 for 5 users and more storage. I haven’t been able to receive any emails and I’ve tried 3 different user names. I need my account refunded ASAP!
I can't log into my email.
App crashes on login
This is a terrible app, especially when you need account recovery assistance. Sure hope you remember every single thing you did when u signed up and I hope you don’t forget a single thing you clicked, don’t forget anyone you email, don’t forget any subscription you signed up for using this email cause they won’t do anything to help you unless u remember everything 100% no deviation. Don’t think to yourself “surely there’s a way” cause there isn’t. This is the most backwoods, third world email service I’ve ever seen. Actual garbage human beings
What happened?
I have to remove all my critical logins from Proton. I can’t be locked out of anything with 2 factor while Proton does maintenance.
Manual refresh isn't working and the trash folder will not open.
I absolutely regret updating this app. I now can no longer receive 2FA emails, in order to provide the secure code and login to pay my mortgage!!! This is unacceptable fix this ASAP!!
They have ZERO contingency plan, as demonstrated by today’s overheating incident in Frankfurt, Germany, which left millions of customers in the dark and without access to their email accounts. I’d be looking for a company that has actually developed comprehensive disaster-recovery and redundancy plans to ensure customers have access to their email 99% of the time, regardless of what’s happening in the world. Especially now, when extreme heat is becoming an increasing threat to data centers. At some point, these data centers are going to literally fry themselves! 🔥🥵
I am currently in a situation where I cannot send or access critical emails because the entire system is under emergency maintenance. It is the start of a business day and I cannot meet deadlines because this service is not reliable. That is an absolute deal-breaker. Even AOL does not do that.
It has very little storage space, and eventually it will force you to buy more. I had 64 emails there, and it was full!! Furthermore, if your storage is full, you won't receive emails; they won't show up. I am gradually leaving this provider and going back to my old email addresses, which have plenty of space. I am not the only one with negative experiences.
I purchased Proton Unlimited and have spent too much time tying to send just one secure email. Help, or please refund my money .
Proton mail stopped working both in my Firefox browser on my laptop AND with the app (even before I just updated my most recent mail was from May, 3.5mi ago). Hot garbage.
Had to stop using because it was so slow. I recently had to sign in to Visible but never could receive a verification email before it expired. Appalling.
What would it take to build a viable competitor, what would it cost to run every month, and a prompt to get started. Generated from the reviews on file; one LLM call per brief. Set ANTHROPIC_API_KEY for a real brief; the stub only fills in a template.
