Store ratings include star-only taps from in-app prompts, which skew high. The peak and recent figures come only from people who wrote a review, which skews low. Compare each against itself: the drop is the signal, and a big gap between the two usually means heavy rating prompting is masking unhappy users.

😭 Downloaded guide

★ · v15.5 · Sep 26, 2026

When I am out of service and spend what I did on a guide it should work. 3 days into my 80 mile river trip the downloaded guide stopped working. Nice when it actually works. WOULD NOT DEPEND ON. Especially if out of service.

good for PCT, not the Camino

★★ · v15.5 · Sep 25, 2026

Not so good for the Camino del Norte - directs you into a dangerous road walk heading into san vincente; both gronze and wise pilgrim are better alternatives

Failed when I needed it most

★ · v15.4 · Sep 2, 2026

Bought this. DOWNLOADED specific area map for offline use. Got to trailhead, all looked good. Got three miles in, all looked good. Note that I was on airplane mode and app worked great. Then about five miles in near a 12,000 pass, storm blowing in and no trail visible — the app goes black. Nothing. No map. Nothing. Restart the app. Nothing. Restart phone. Nothing. Black screen. Cannot zoom out, in. Nothing. Dead app. Fortunately I had another app on my phone that wasn’t as sexy, BUT THE OTHER APP WORKED! Not as detailed or nifty as this one (when it worked), but that other app got me on the trail and off the pass before the lightning and hail hit. When this app works, 5/5. But when I needed it most, it totally failed. -5/5. And yes, I tested it without cell and without wifi several times and it worked. Do not recommend for critical situations.

Froze during JMT hike

★ · v15.4 · Aug 22, 2026

While the water and comment features are good, do not rely on this for your navigation. After day 3 it quit working. When I opened the app it just froze. Restarting phone and app did nothing. A friend off trail gave suggestions through my Garmin in Reach but none worked. The app froze a couple of days later for the person I was hiking with. It’s unacceptable for a back country navigation app to completely lock up and become useless. Fortunately we had paper maps and used Strava to track time and miles traveled. HAVE MAPS DOWNLOADED ON A DIFFERENT APP. DO NOT RELY solely on FarOut.

The Bandwagon of Mediocrity!

★★ · v15.4 · Aug 17, 2026

FarOut, an essential app for all hikes! Glad to see they hopped on the modern app development bandwagon of unstable glitchy mediocrity. New aesthetics > functionality. All these apps change for the sake of change and nothing more, using the same cookie cutter formula and it is soooooooooooo bad.

App is Buggy

★★ · v15.3 · Jul 28, 2026

Overall the app offers a great experience. I have purchased all the PCT Apps and used for many years. There is one major issue that all of you should be aware of. It has been around awhile and still not fixed. Do not have the app open while turning your phone off airplane mode. If you do it will do a search probably to see if you have a subscription or purchase. If you have poor cell service the link to your maps disappear. The dowloaded maps remain but you can’t access. If however you created a route, you can access those and get access to the downloaded maps and comments. I am guessing most people don’t have routes created so you are in danger of loosing access to maps while on trail. This is one of the reasons, I have paper maps and a compass. But I am guessing many users don’t have this as a back up. So this could be a safety issue.

Buggy

★ · v15.3 · Jul 11, 2026

Long standing disappearing comment bug remains unfixed. Been a problem for over a year and multiple versions. Should be a five star but I have zero confidence in the app.

Nothing loads

★ · v15.3 · Jul 10, 2026

This app doesn’t work, nothing loads

Not great for OR and WA hikes

★ · v15.3 · Jul 8, 2026

Not finding this app useful at all. Doesn’t show the full trails. No public comments or anything on any of the trails Ive looked at so far. Way too hard to use and no back button. See no benefit over AllTrails. Waste of money

Unusable after 3 days on trail

★ · v15.2 · Jul 4, 2026

The app is fine for planning while you have internet, but BEWARE of using it as your sole source for navigation on trail. My experience is it just stops working after about 3 days. It opens then freezes. The fix is to reinstall which isn’t going to happen easily on a thru hike. I know. I had backups for navigation and luckily I was in the Sierras where water is plentiful. Be safe out there and DO NOT DEPEND ON THIS APP AS A NAVIGATION APP it will stop working just when you need it.

Search not compatible with IOS

★ · v15.2 · Jun 3, 2026

Would love to follow my friends but can’t search for them and their invites don’t work.

Stranded on Eagle Rock Loop

★ · v15.2 · May 22, 2026

I assumed I could access the downloaded map when I had no signal, but evidently not. Am grateful my buddy had Garmin app. Please let me know if the fine print said I do not have access when there is not a signal & I will update my rating.

Worthless app

★ · v15.1 · Apr 7, 2026

This app sucks, waste of money. I bought the PA NCT map and it didn’t work well in areas with limited service.

Epic trail failure

★ · v15.1 · Apr 5, 2026

I’ve used farout for several years now on a few trails. In July I hiked the wonderland trail and my app wouldn’t respond, the screen would freeze, and it wouldn’t record my route. I uninstalled and reinstalled the app, same problem. Luckily my hiking partner also had the app and was having no issues. I meant to contact farout back then and ask for a refund for that trail since it wasn’t cheap and was totally useless. I forgot. Now I’m preparing to hike another section of the Appalachian Trail and the app is having the same issue. My screen is frozen and there’s nothing that I can do about it. Not only that, but FarOut has not even made it easy for you to contact Support. There are a bunch of tutorial and frequently ask questions but no way it seems to contact the developer to get help directly. This is obviously case in point why you can’t rely on technology alone and should always have a backup. I’ve loved this app for years but this glitch that seems impossible to fix is ruining it. Please make support easier to contact.

Won’t open

★ · v15.1 · Mar 24, 2026

The app won’t even open

Expensive, update sucks

★ · v15.1 · Mar 23, 2026

Update sucks. Difficult to navigate. Too expensive. Profiting off of community sourced, public land data is super slimy. Use a free app like opentrails

Not user friendly.

★ · v15.1 · Mar 10, 2026

Not sure how it even works. Type in great Smokey mountains national park and nothing comes up. If I’m combining trails or making my own route how does it work.

Great app sorry customer service

★ · v15.0.4 · Feb 28, 2026

I have lost one of of my purchased trails and I can not get customer service to even respond to my request to restore my missing app.

No Appalachian Trail section maps

★★ · v15.0.4 · Feb 20, 2026

Yeah so the App Store clearly shows there are sections to purchase for the Appalachian Trail, but after downloading the app, I realize you have to pay all $75 for it. No thanks.

Let me highlight trails again

★ · v15.0.4 · Feb 8, 2026

I want to be able to highlight trails when I touch them again

Grand Canyon Whitewater

★ · v15.0.4 · Jan 14, 2026

DO NOT PURCHASE THIS APP! It’s a complete waste of money. It will provide you with the maps but does not update the current GPS location. I just spent the last 25 days on the river laughing at how useless this app is. CalTopo worked, AllTrails worked, FarOut Grand Canyon Whitewater did not. Total garbage.

They ruined a good bit

★★ · v15.0.4 · Jan 3, 2026

Farout added an ai feature that categorizes and deletes comments automatically and now years of useful comments are just gone, do better farout

buckeye trail issue

★ · v12.2.1 · Dec 31, 2025

map works real good but rest is unreliable for example there is issue on water location when i contact support the reject to help because my ios was not supported. When i tested the app on ios supported by farout the issue was there , i guess they prefer to reject help instead to do sone work to investigate! dangerous to on true-hike with unreliable water source location as usual tech company sale something, get paid, and make support optional

newest update renders app unusable

★ · v15.0 · Oct 28, 2025

app crashes immediately upon opening, unable to access any of my paid maps. awesome update, bricked the entire app!

Now a Worthless App

★ · v14.0.4 · Oct 10, 2025

I originally got the FarOut app (previously Guthook when it was a good app) to hike the PCT. Worked well, despite being convoluted with poor instructions. Now I’m getting ready to hike the Arizona Trail, so I purchased the map and, Lo and behold, I no longer have the PCT maps nor do I have the Arizona Trail?!? Clicking “Restore purchases” gives me the reply of “No previous purchases”?!? This app is completely worthless, it is a rip-off and scam!! Don’t download or make the mistake of purchasing anything. I’m going back to AllTrails - definitely more reliable! 👎👎

The opportunity

written Oct 16, 2026

A viable competitor must be boringly, provably reliable offline. That means maps and paid guides that never lock, freeze or disappear in airplane mode, and purchases that always restore. It must also match FarOut's curated long-trail waypoint data and timely crowd-sourced water comments. It could win because FarOut's core users (thru-hikers) are safety-driven and are publicly losing trust after the v14/v15 regressions. The hard part is not the app but rebuilding the trail content and comment network, so the realistic play is a focused wedge on one or two flagship trails rather than a broad catalog.

Table stakes

  • Fully offline vector topo maps with downloadable trail corridors
  • GPS location dot, with heading, that works in airplane mode
  • Trail-specific waypoints: water sources, campsites, junctions, resupply, hostels, trail towns
  • Mileage to the next waypoint plus an elevation profile, with daily distance and elevation planning
  • Crowd-sourced, timestamped comments on waypoints (especially water reliability), cached offline and synced when back in signal
  • One-time purchase per trail or section, with no mandatory subscription
  • Reliable Restore Purchases and account-linked entitlements across devices
  • Track recording with battery-efficient GPS
  • Off-trail detection with a navigate-back-to-trail cue
  • Trail and place search, plus clear standard navigation (back buttons, predictable tabs)
  • Coverage of at least one flagship long trail at FarOut-level detail
  • Multiple activity modes eventually (river mile guides for paddling, Camino routes)

Where the 10x is

  • Lands-on-airplane-mode guarantee: paid content keeps working forever offline with no network-triggered entitlement check. The fix is a signed local receipt cache plus a grace policy that never hides content.
  • Verifiable offline reliability: a pre-trip 'trail-ready check' confirms tiles, guide data and entitlement are cached, and it publishes a 30-day-offline soak test result for each release.
  • A crash-proof launch path: safe-mode boot that always shows the cached map and GPS dot even if sync, comments or account code fails.
  • Purchases tied to account and Apple ID, with one-tap restore that works across phones, plus a human support SLA (e.g., 24h) for purchase issues.
  • Comments are never destroyed: moderation only hides, keeps an audit log, and lets users view filtered items. Comments are timestamped, threaded and sorted by recency at each waypoint.
  • Section-level pricing (buy just the 100 miles you're hiking) with an upgrade credit toward the full trail, addressing the $75-bundle complaint.
  • High-resolution offline downloads (z16+ topo plus satellite option) selectable by corridor width.
  • Stale-POI decay: hostels and services show a 'last verified' date, and community confirmations flag closed businesses automatically.
  • Technical-difficulty and condition ratings per section, sourced from recent trail comments.
  • Optional import of existing GPX tracks and waypoint lists so FarOut refugees can bring their plans.

Ongoing costs

Item Providers $/month Note
Vector basemap tiles and offline packs Mapbox (Maps SDK, offline), MapTiler, Protomaps/PMTiles self-hosted on Cloudflare R2, Stadia Maps $200–1500 Driven by map loads and offline region downloads per MAU. Mapbox's offline tile-count limits and terms need checking. Self-hosting Protomaps PMTiles on R2 can bring this under $100 but adds ops work.
Topographic and terrain data (contours, hillshade, elevation) USGS 3DEP/The National Map, OpenStreetMap, Mapbox Terrain-DEM, MapTiler Terrain $0–500 USGS and OSM data are free but need processing and hosting. Paid terrain tiles cost more as download volume grows.
Trail geometry and waypoint content licensing OpenStreetMap, USFS/NPS open data, trail associations (PCTA, ATC), independent guidebook authors $0–3000 Very uncertain. OSM and public trail data are free (ODbL attribution and share-alike apply). Curated guide data from trail associations or authors may need revenue share or a flat fee.
Backend hosting, database and API Supabase, Fly.io, AWS (RDS/Lambda), Render $50–600 Driven by comment sync volume, auth and photo uploads. A launch-stage user base is small.
Object storage and CDN for offline packs and photos Cloudflare R2 + CDN, AWS S3 + CloudFront, Backblaze B2 $20–400 Multi-hundred-MB trail packs are the main driver. Choosing R2 for zero egress fees matters here.
In-app purchase and entitlement management RevenueCat, Apple StoreKit 2 $0–300 RevenueCat is free under roughly $2.5k MTR, then about 1% of revenue. StoreKit 2 alone costs nothing.
Push notifications Apple APNs, OneSignal, Firebase Cloud Messaging $0–50 APNs is free. A wrapper service is only worth paying for at scale.
Comment moderation and spam filtering OpenAI moderation API (free), Perspective API, Hive $0–150 Cost depends on comment volume. Flags should be non-destructive so nothing is ever bulk-deleted.
Crash reporting and analytics Sentry, Firebase Crashlytics, TelemetryDeck $0–100 Free tiers cover a few thousand users. Offline crash buffering is essential.
Search and geocoding (place, park and trail names) Apple MapKit search (free), Mapbox Search, Pelias/Photon self-hosted $0–200 A local on-device index of trail names avoids most calls. Online geocoding is only needed for planning.
Apple Developer Program and miscellaneous Apple, Google Workspace, Postmark $10–50 Covers the $99/yr Apple fee plus domain and email.
Ballpark total $280–6850 launch-stage, a few thousand users
