Store ratings include star-only taps from in-app prompts, which skew high. The peak and recent figures come only from people who wrote a review, which skews low. Compare each against itself: the drop is the signal, and a big gap between the two usually means heavy rating prompting is masking unhappy users.

From the very beginning, the AI’s voice kept on going in and out. And every time I try to reply, I kept getting an error message - Something went wrong. I’ll pass.
I have a basic understanding of spanish and wanted to use this to improve but there is little to no consideration given to proper level placement. The avatar just rattles off rapid fire speech with advanced words and grammar and it is impossible to understand. I don't even know what i'm supposed to say most of the time. It's very open ended but i need guidance.
Absolute garbage. The AI is not smart at all and kept thinking I was speaking Frisian when I was speaking Dutch! And it didn’t even pronounce Dutch town names and such correctly, and when I tried to correct it it switched to English and still insisted I was speaking Frisian. The Superfluent app is SIGNIFICANTLY better. I don’t normally leave reviews but this is literally the worst AI app I have ever used.
Extremely disappointing experience. I was charged nearly $150 over time for services I barely used. They auto-renewed my plan at a much higher price without clear notice, and it is nearly impossible to manage or cancel subscriptions smoothly. I sent an email to support regarding a refund for an unused renewal, but received zero response. Be very careful with their billing practices and lack of customer support.
Not being able to find a level that works well for me in this app and it’s being generally unlike the ads in many respects, I was very disappointed. The lowest level was too simple and the next level up just chattered on and on each time it spoke, necessitating clicking on the translation every time. I tried to contact support twice to get help with a refund, both during the Apple process and after, and received no response whatsoever. Having been persuaded by the ads which looked so nicely conversational, I foolishly had thought I’d give it a try - even though I could really ill afford the three month time period, which was the only thing being offered. Sadly, there was no trial period and I, apparently like others here, never saw any free version, so if I wanted to try it, I had to take the plunge, which I now regret. In short, desperate requests for help saving me from my foolish mistake had no good end.
if you say something else besides what they are trying to get you to say it won’t register and it will put in what they want you to say and say it’s perfect. u cannot practice right
I downloaded this app about a year ago, I was offered a cheaper subscription for a year so I decided to try premium. (About 49.99 from 99.99) Now a year later even though I made sure to cancel my subscription. I was still charged 99.99. The crazy part is, I did not get premium for this purchase that came out. When I contacted Praktika, the first two times they contacted me back I could tell they were automated texts. The second email didn’t even talk about my problem. It started saying sorry you can’t sign in which wasn’t the issue. I found out that their purchases are all run by Apple. Most frustrating process with no help. Either way Apple paid them my money and they didn’t give me premium for it so they basically stole from me and blamed it on Apple with no consequences or way to refund directly back to me. I feel like that’s kinda important with apps like this. So anyway, I went to contact Apple but there is no evidence that this charge even happened through them. It only showed up on my bank account. Thankfully I check my account regularly and saw the charge. I really enjoy this app and I recommend using its base level learning, but I’ll definitely never trust their premium purchase again. Hopefully this helps anyone who’s thinking about it.
So, this app is pretty straightforward and I’m guessing it will be helpful because I’m going to make sure I get my money’s worth. Here’s the thing… I was on a trial with Praktika along with a separate app, and, as life goes, I got caught up and totally forgot to cancel the automatic renewal of the subscription. This is the first app I’ve used in years that didn’t bother reminding me that my trial was ending. When my wife asked me about the purchase the day after my account was charged, I had no idea. I hadn’t used the app in a couple of days truth be told. When I reached out to ask for a refund because of the accidental renewal, I was denied… TWICE…. Without explanation. Be careful with this one. It feels like they don’t really care about their customers.
The language I want and need is not listed. Misleading information to say you can learn any language
I used this app over a year ago with a free trial and completely forgot about it. When I downloaded the app again, I was shown a free trial offer, so I accepted it. There was no warning that I had already used a free trial or that I was no longer eligible. Instead, I was immediately charged for a full year. If you’ve ever used this app before, be very careful before accepting a “free trial” offer again.
The beginner lessons are too advanced and there’s not an option to learn the numbers in alphabets the things that we need to know first before starting into sentence structure. I also have an issue with the buffering during the lessons
The system adds the kanji meaning in parenthesis 日本語(にほんご) and the AI reads it that way "nihongo nihongo". Also, it pronounces EVERY letter. Japanese doesn't work that way しよう is pronounced "shou" but the AI says "she-yo". Unusable.
There is so much wrong with this. You have to press and hold a button down to speak. The ”listener” is like the worst kind of autocorrect and does not correctly writes your responses. There are no instructions in the app. The avatar just starts talking and you have to guess what it may be saying. There is no easy way to get help within the app. Navigation is difficult. The conversation with the ai tutor is large print/screen. The button you have to hold down covers the next conversation or question, so you can’t see it to see what you are supposed to do or say. I wish I knew these things before I purchased it.
The AI tutor often pronounces the French verb ‘est’ as though it were the cardinal direction ‘est’ (east), which is to say that it improperly articulates the consonants of the word. There are other inexplicable mispronunciations, as well. Otherwise, it seems to be a good and engaging app. Unfortunately, the frequent pronunciation errors are distracting and I’ll be seeking a refund if they aren’t addressed and remedied. Update: I submitted a support ticket. The only response I received was a request to rate my support experience.
I’m tired of having to answer 30 questions before I even know about the app or what it costs. It’s a giant waste of time and I wish this trend would stop
In the Japanese language, the avatar reads the furigana in parentheses so words repeat. It is so distracting and makes learning and listening so hard (and this is from someone who lived in Japan for a year). It’s like listening to an English speaker say: I walked walk the dog dog out out side by the river river. I love the idea of Praktika but I just can’t use it.
My AI tutor does not speak like a native. He had a heavy English accent.
The UI looks good, but the UX was horrible. The AI engineering needs serious work. I cannot believe how frustrating trying to use this app has been. I’m already an intermediate level Japanese speaker and I got the app to up my game. Instead, I spent most of my time correcting mistakes it made on the simplest words and grammar. Additionally, it spoke all of the written text including the phonetic romaji that followed the katana or hiragana. This redundancy is not only annoying, it makes learning difficult and tedious. When I asked it to stop, it did, but only briefly. I switched to Italian and had different, but equally disappointing interface issues. The app couldn’t learn when corrected and the same mistakes were made repeated. To make matters worse, I can’t get my money back because I purchased the app from the App Store. Final conclusion: Create your own agent that will actually be intelligent instead of wasting your money.
The Persian accent and talking is pretty bad. It’s something between Indian and Pakistani and Arabic not Persian at all.
When checking your response to the AI tutor for correct grammar, on more than one occasion the program incorrectly claims words you used were not right, even though you did not actually use those words. Worse though, its suggestion for a better phrasing contains nonsensical words not belonging to the language you are studying (German in my case). Not a helpful learning experience.
I need the first prompt to be English so I can better understand the content and provide a better response
I‘d give it zero stars were that possible. I am a native English speaker wishing to improve my mandarin. The pronunciation of the Chinese words is WRONG. This app is a waste of time and it is not cheap. Save your money for something else.
The app itself is pretty decent, but the speech recognition is frustrating. When I speak a full sentence, it usually understands me pretty well. But when I’m practicing a single short word, especially smaller/common words, it will sometimes just refuse to recognize what I’m saying no matter how many times I repeat it or how clearly I speak. Then I’m forced to type the answer just to get past the lesson, which defeats the whole purpose of using the speaking exercises. The advertising also made it sound like the app would actively correct your pronunciation if you pronounced something incorrectly. In my experience, it mostly just tells you how to pronounce the word and then checks what you enter through the microphone. I haven’t really seen the detailed pronunciation correction that was advertised. I was considering paying for the subscription, but the speech recognition issues are frustrating enough that I don’t think I will.
1. takes too much internet traffic and requires really fast speed. definitely not for travelers. 2. the customer support is horrible. they value money, not the clients. 3. too many bugs. i went through 4 major updates versions of this app, one thing gets fixed, a new one appears.
basically not usable, and their ads left out the insane latency at every exchange. very dishonest advertising.
What would it take to build a viable competitor, what would it cost to run every month, and a prompt to get started. Generated from the reviews on file; one LLM call per brief. Set ANTHROPIC_API_KEY for a real brief; the stub only fills in a template.
