Store ratings include star-only taps from in-app prompts, which skew high. The peak and recent figures come only from people who wrote a review, which skews low. Compare each against itself: the drop is the signal, and a big gap between the two usually means heavy rating prompting is masking unhappy users.

Dispersed camping layer not available

★ · v26.37.0 · Oct 4, 2026

Specifically downloaded this app for dispersed camping information for our mountain biking trips. Mountain biking information appears to be excellent but the dispersed camping layer on the map It’s not showing up and there appears to be no update available.

Fake loading

★ · v26.31.1 · Aug 30, 2026

Deleted this trash after i saw the fake loading bars after every question alluding to this being a subscription app. Waste of time

Search sucks

★★ · v26.31.1 · Aug 28, 2026

Search feature is extremely limited, and not as good as a backcountry app should be. You’d expect to be able to search for certain camps, rivers, and things like that, but nope. Just a half assed mountain project app that charges an arm and a leg to use

Um… where are the campsites

★★ · v26.31.0 · Aug 20, 2026

I’m looking for good places on BLM land to camp. This app shows my places to hike, places to mountain bike, places to climb, and ski places. But the promo material talks a lot about camping. Is there a secret alternative interface for camping?

Can’t cancel

★ · v26.31.0 · Aug 17, 2026

I have cancel before and I did it again I’ve been charged for the past Atleast few months of trying to cancel and keeps saying it is but still charges. Very scumming and very disappointing. I enjoyed the app I plan on paying on months I neeed but I will no longer ever be doing that again.

Subscription fees are outrageous

★ · v26.31.0 · Aug 12, 2026

Not as expected. Wanted this for leisure: Weekend hikes, exploring potential parks, no option for a straight fixed fee. All options are monthly subscriptions. It’s 2026, no one wants a monthly subscription anymore. Stay away from

Data grab

★ · v26.27.0 · Jul 26, 2026

Them moment you open the app they are asking to register. No trail period. Straight to the data grab

Not as good as Far out app

★ · v26.27.0 · Jul 23, 2026

The reason I downloaded it was I kept seeing the ads they push in youtube. I tried it. Not impressive. Far out is way better. But apparently they push in youtube too much, and much of my subscription money would go to the youtubers than actually making the app better. Would not recommend.

Do not buy the memberships it is not worth it!

★ · v26.27.0 · Jul 22, 2026

The PAID filters are nice. But why are you not able to filter through different types of climbing. Having to sift through every single pinger to see if it’s rope or sport or bouldering is not worth it. And I would highly recommend not wasting your money if that’s what you’re looking for.

Bring back line tool

★ · v26.27.0 · Jul 22, 2026

Why did this handy tool disappear?

Dangerously inaccurate for anything other than a Sunday stroll

★ · v26.27.0 · Jul 16, 2026

Just the most obvious things in onX after a few minutes of browsing before my 7-day trial expires, these are only in Chugach State Park because that’s the area I know the best to double-check their maps: - maps are much lower resolution than Gaia or Caltopo, and suprisingly even lower detail than Alltrails - Only has crevass information on satellite/3D view, Caltopo has crevasses from lidar on topo maps - North and South Yuyanq' Ch'ex are called “Suicide Peaks” and the South peak is the only one marked. Despite there being a route listed for the North peak. - East Fork of Eklutna River doesn’t exist, at all. It’s not that it’s not labeled, it’s not even there. - Mount Yukla is incorrectly marked as being a mountain pass a few MILES away from the actual summit - Half-dozen prominent peaks east of Williwaw aren’t marked - Avalanche Mountain not marked - The trails detailed in the military lands near Temptation Peak don’t mention anything about all the red tape required to hike on those military lands - See above but for Ram Valley access - Concerto Peak not marked - Chugach State Park 7000ers: the Kiliaks and Korohusk aren’t marked - Missing: White Lice Mountain, Ovis Peak, Baneful, Boisterous, The Watchman - Eklutna high traverse is marked, but almost every peak on it is not - Pioneer peak summit marker is way off - Baldy to Mile high traverse is marked but most of the mountains it connects are not, including Baldy and Mile High - I’m an avid Open Street Map (OSM) contributer. If OnX had simply taken this free data, then repackaged it and sold it…this app would be better for it. The errors in marking some of the most notable mountains in the most populated parts of Alaska are laughably bad - I guess all the VC funding an influencer marketing in the world can’t account for bad taste

Terrible System

★ · v26.23.0 · Jun 28, 2026

You cannot build routes in app. It almost seems like the app does whatever it wants and makes random points on the map when building a route. It will not let you remove random points and it will not let you build a route from where you are. Pointless feature in the app that only annoys you when you try to use it. Not happy with this app.

Don’t Give Money to VC Clowns

★ · v26.23.0 · Jun 23, 2026

The app constantly nagged me for a review even after I stupidly paid for a subscription just to get access to public information that you can get for free at sites like OpenTrailMap.us, so here’s my review: don’t pay for this. These clowns bought the REI Hiking Project, MTB Project, Powder Project, Trail Run Project, and Mountain Project, then OnX acquired them and ruined them all with their subscription plans that they gate everything behind. Everyone who contributed anything to these just gave free value to capitalist pigs. Don’t support this and use something open source instead.

Misleading

★ · v26.23.0 · Jun 22, 2026

Signed up for their year promo deal only to find out they scam you to pay more money for the options you believe your getting in the advertising, but aren’t there!

Forgot how cheap and greedy these developers are. Deleted all their apps.

★ · v26.23.0 · Jun 22, 2026

The OnX world continues to grow at a rate only outpaced by their greedy fees. There are many OnX specialty apps these days, and every single one of them has its own fee and usually limited to 1 state. You would think it would be 1 app with all those features. Afterall, if you’re hunting or fishing, you’re driving and hiking in. But no. You have to subscribe to all of these apps all separately or you have to get the elite subscription. However none of these apps are integrated and so they are all essentially standalone. They all require their own updates and favorites and learning curves and features etc etc etc and subscriptions. Lame and cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap. There are much better alternatives on the market that aren’t so expensive and that offer combined features. OnX is garbage

Login Required

★ · v26.21.0 · Jun 11, 2026

Why? Just a quick browse now requires wasted time.

Over priced

★ · v26.21.0 · Jun 4, 2026

I prefer Gaia GPS app because you can have all of your activities in ONE app. Why do I need separate apps and separate subscriptions for my activities?

Very few trails

★★ · v26.19.0 · May 29, 2026

Living in the southern US, backpacking trails aren’t always easy to find. I thought this app could show me some options that AllTrails didn’t, but it had no new options and didn’t even include most of the trails featured on AllTrails. And it requires a subscription. Garbage.

Jordon Hot Springs

★★ · v26.17.1 · May 18, 2026

It could not find the first location I searched for!!! A very popular trail in the Gila Wilderness mind you. Deleted the app within minutes after my first search.

Glitchy

★ · v26.17.1 · May 17, 2026

Very glitchy.

Won’t download any maps

★★ · v26.17.0 · May 11, 2026

Just says it’s determining the download size but never downloads the offline map.

Disappointing

★★ · v26.17.0 · May 10, 2026

I know it’s just a money grab even though they claim it’s not. I don’t know why they can’t combine some of the apps together so you don’t have to have multiple subscriptions. I currently have the lower tier subscription for Backcountry and apparently the updated something and took away some of the features now to force you to get there top level subscription service, what a joke. Not sure if I’m going to be renewing in the future. I might just switch over to Gaia full-time.

Stop

★★ · v26.15.0 · Apr 24, 2026

Pop ups, upgrade, rate us, upgrade again, redirect to upgrade, redirect to random onX web site. Haven’t used the app 5 minutes.

Good for property info, but frustrating for everything else.

★ · v26.13.0 · Apr 11, 2026

Nothing is intuitive in this app. They’ve made it easier to build offline maps, but routes always want to start where I currently am. I see no way to build a route for a location I’ll be going without it including the trip there. I’ll stick with Google maps (free!) for everything other than property info.

Time Waster

★ · v26.9.0 · Mar 18, 2026

Americants don’t value time. You think I’m going to sign up for something without having a preview?! Waste my time and personal info - ur all nuts!

The opportunity
