WAS great, now it’s AI slop
★ · v2.21.1 · Oct 8, 2026
This app used to hire horticulturist and etymologist, and the answers were excellent.
Now it’s fed all that the horticulturists and etymologists taught them into AI, and the results are AI slop….
Worse, this app now warms the planet and disrupts bees’ and other critical pollinator’s abilities to fly, with AI data centers… That this app would choose AI slop and climate warming - THE greatest threat to critical pollinators, when the app relies on the survival of plants, insects, birds…
Also, now thy have chosen to steal jobs from horticulturists and etymologists - the very experts who made their app possible.
Whoever owns this app is horrible. Boycott AI if you care about insects, birds, plants, human survival.
Canceled subscription but still being charged
★ · v2.21.1 · Oct 2, 2026
I got the app to help identify a bug bite on my daughter‘s arm that said I could try it for free so I did that option to where you could do a free trial and then after that, you pay a certain amount for a year well I literally canceled my subscription the same day that I got the app and now they’re still trying to charge me $40 for the app and I can’t get a hold of anyone absolutely ridiculous and I’ll never use this app Again
Frustrating and Condescending
★ · v2.21.1 · Oct 2, 2026
I briefly used this app to try to identify a handful of Lepidoptera species. Two of the IDs looked accurate, but the other two didn’t seem right. I consulted a couple other resources, including a field guide, located the species, and attempted to label my photos accordingly in the app. I wasn’t able to, and when I attempted to use the AI Assistant, the AI informed me I was wrong, despite acknowledging that the characteristics of the specimens were, in fact, consistent with the species I identified. After all that, the AI effectively told me the app wouldn’t let me manually add the correct label to the photos. Unsubscribed immediately.

Also the bug got away while I was forced to watch the stupid unskippable cutscene when you install
Not reliable
★ · v2.21.1 · Aug 18, 2026
Three photos of the same ant, gave me 3 different identifications. Highly unreliable app
Used to be free
★ · v2.21.1 · Aug 14, 2026
I liked this app & used it often but the last update made it a subscription $33/ a YEAR insane. Deleted it.
Bug Identifier App
★ · v2.21.1 · Aug 2, 2026
The app is supposed to be a free app! When downloading one only has a choice to pay $39.99 per year in order to use it!!!
I call this the old bait and switch game!!! This is totally illegal advertising!!! If something is advertised as free a company CANNOT then switch to a payment expectation in order for the client to use it!!!
BEWARE OF THIS APP!!!!!
Bad people
★ · v2.21.1 · Jul 29, 2026
Get you in with a product, then put it behind a pay wall.
Not accurate
★ · v2.21.1 · Jul 24, 2026
Took Pictures same bug three times all had different insects so I quit using the app forgot about the trial period so they charged me 39.99 with no chance of a refund.
Not Free
★ · v2.21.1 · Jul 22, 2026
Said was free. It’s not!
Not free
★ · v2.21.1 · Jul 16, 2026
I searched for a free app. This one makes you give a credit card to get a free trial for one week. So it isn’t free. It should not pop up as a free app if it isn’t actually free.
NOT free

Hmmm
Tricky
★ · v2.21.1 · Jul 7, 2026

Requires subscription
★ · v2.21.1 · Jul 1, 2026
Literally the first thing they ask for is your money and you can’t use it without it starting a free trial they hope you’ll forget about
Wrong more often than right
★★ · v2.21.1 · Jun 30, 2026
When I downloaded this app many months ago, it said it was free. But then I was signed up for a free trial. It was my own fault and I take full responsibility that I did not cancel it in time. But I figured, ok, I downloaded it for a reason and I’ll use it for the year. I haven’t needed it but a handful of times. It only got the bug correct once. I’m so dissatisfied that I wasted my money. Tonight my husband pulled the bug down that the ‘identified’ and it want even close to being the same bug.
Wrong ID won’t allow correction
★★ · v2.21.1 · Jun 27, 2026
Overall a reasonable app, but it’s impossible to correct an incorrect ID. The app identified colaspis viridiceps as colaspis brunnea. When I try to correct the ID, it’s clear that colaspis viridiceps isn’t even in the app, despite it being a common beetle in the southwest U.S. where I am.
Cannot trust species ID. Genus was correct, but this app isn’t fine tuned enough yet for species level certainty.
Trash!!
★ · v2.21.1 · Jun 10, 2026
I’m disappointed in the fact that I can identify bugs or bites only if I pay for it! Where and what happened to the opportunity of seeing things firsthand testing them out and then paying for monthly services for something you might not even want or ever use again, and don’t give me that seven day trial sign up and then cancel bs because we all know there are so many hidden clauses where you’re gonna pull out extra money that you don’t deserve..
The app is wrong about 50% of the time
★ · v2.21.1 · Jun 9, 2026
I take macro photographs of insects and have a decent amount of entomology experience. This app is pretty much useless to me due to its high rate of misidentification. For me, it’s up around 50%. These aren’t obscure insects either, in may cases they are native Wyoming species. I run into the same problem with identifications from around the world on iNaturalist. The app is wrong about 50% of the time on those, too.
I see A LOT of rave reviews about how accurate this is. It makes me wonder how other reviewers are so certain it’s accurate. My guess is that the insect looks something like the Picture Insect photo, and therefore, it must be accurate.
I’m not sure, but I suspect this app takes the entered photo and compares it to other photos and once it finds something similar, it identifies it. There doesn’t seem to be any consideration about where the insect was located, the habitat, its posture, etc. I had one his morning where it misidentified a transverse ladybug for a seven spotted ladybug.
I could be mistaken, but when I try to correct a misidentification, it only corrects it on my ID. I don’t think it lets the developers know that the app is wrong.
If I don’t trust the app, it doesn’t do me any good. There are much better resources available online.
Can’t find
★ · v2.21.1 · Jun 7, 2026
Can’t find what the bug is
I can’t detect any insects.
★ · v2.21.1 · May 20, 2026
Most of the time when I use this app, it just shows random insects and not the real thing.
Wrong/mixed results for tiny bug
★★ · v2.21.1 · May 8, 2026
Granted, the specimen was very tiny, but it gave me a different result. Every time I took a picture. I subsequently downloaded Lens Scan, and who knows if it’s results were correct, but at least they were consistent. I could also tell a big difference between the clarity of the picture looking through the other app compare compared to this one. Not impressive.
Hmmm,
★★ · v2.21.1 · May 7, 2026
Good app but not for kids
Inaccurate
★ · v2.21.1 · May 1, 2026
I applied a test to the app and it failed ok the very first insect. It confused a beetle with an eastern termite. You are better off studying and learning your local insects or you’ll windup getting the wrong pesticides
Greedy
★ · v2.21.1 · Apr 24, 2026
I shouldn’t have to pay a MONTHLY subscription for knowledge. It should have been a one time purchase of the app. Never using I’ll use google since they at least care.
