Pimsleur | Language Learning

I downloaded this app not because I chose to, but because YouTube’s Pimsleur ad, “juggling fire.. (weird)” curtailed my ability to “skip ad” button watching something really really important. I was literally forced into the Apple App Store pressing “download” and took merrily two seconds to realize I would never in my life use this app, why am I here??, I didn’t want the Pimsleur app to begin with! I’ve now lost, nor can I remember the video I was watching that this ad had taken me away from... So for that, I give it one star. Youtube should always be ad free IMO, if not, at least keep “skip ad” buttons in clear view, not half overlaying “install now” ad buttons all over it!

I got ragebaited very hard

I bought this hoping to learn learn some Swiss German. For that, this app is not helpful to me at all! It does not start with any basics, like sounds of letters etc. The phrases it makes you learn and practice are not at all useful for travel or everyday basics. I would love to pick through the flashcards to learn some words that would be helpful, but it won’t let you do anything if you haven’t completed the very boring and unhelpful lessons. It’s terrible. Waste of time and money

I signed up for a free trial, cancelled it ten days later and requested a refund as the company charged me for a premium subscription. They have a no refund policy…very slimy business

The app is asking which language you wanna learn i click french and next question, where are you from (Russia) and the app does NOT even listed! Why?! The only RUSSIA is not there?!

Look for the bad reviews they’re all the same. This company steals from you! They won’t refund, they charge after you cancel. Pretend they can’t find the charges after you send them your account statement multiple times. They say, still stands, can’t help you. Their customer service rep Oscar is a massive hole. Called me a liar multiple times even after being given the evidence more than once. Turns out I was right and being charged multiple months after cancelling. Then I was told if I wanted a refund I would have to get that from Apple. No their company that made the mistake and took my money months after cancellation. Apple. Corrupt corrupt corrupt!

I can't Delete

simple tasks, like trying a language, once selected it is impossible to unselect: app dev 101. Lessons are boring and too slow (at least for languages related to native language). Maybe ok for very different languages. Also should evaluate current knowledge and suggest a starting point. This is possible if they're already using voice AI.

1 star because I liked that you can listen to 30 minute lessons while stuck in morning and afternoon traffic. The multiple choice quiz questions are useless because there is always 1 obvious correct choice. You aren’t going to learn any hiragana or reading relying on their reading lessons which are done poorly. The order in which you learn things is nonsensical. It was well over 30 lessons before you learn things like “nice to meet you”. But one of the first things you learn is that you would like to buy gloves and a keychain? After 60 lessons I think I still didn’t learn how to ask for the check at a restaurant.

I have tried to cancel for months and they continue to charge me anyways. I had to cancel my credit card to stop the charges. Stay far away!!!!

I keep being forced to leave the app and rate the app. This is not good.

If you sign up for the free trial and cancel on time, they still bill you! Just look at all the reviews scroll down and see the negative reviews with people have been charged when they should not have been. That’s just playing corruption and greed. The first red flag to look for is it’s not gonna be in your subscriptions and under Apple. They will make sure you can’t cancel like that. The honest people that are developing apps! Do not use these people go somewhere else please you won’t be treated right here! There are reviews of people canceling the app and still being billed the next year. This is just criminal? Try using Langua these guys are honest street shooters

I have purchased a subscription multiple times. This app is as pointless as all the others. They teach you conversational language for some contrived interaction between native speakers, but nothing useful to ACTUALLY COMMUNICATE. Words like left, right, up, down, colors… take fixes of lessons to get to.

Tried to cancel the app but wasn’t able to. The company charged me for a whole extra year.

Signed up for the free one week trial. Before the end of the trial was charged for the month subscription contacted customer service asking for refund as I was planning on purchasing a lifetime subscription. Received an abrupt answer from customer service saying they do not do refunds. Responded to them explaining that the charge had been placed before the end of the free trial. I received no response, and even after submitting a new request was ignored. I would highly recommend looking elsewhere for products with more customer friendly policies.

i couldnt find a library for English for Turkish. also i would ok for plaing english. im so confused how to get benefit out of this app

I’ve been looking for a language program for Eur Portuguese. Primsleur is a rare one out there - so earns some points for covering different dialects. Perhaps my review is unfair - I’ve only done the free lesson but several things stuck out: PROS: • It is EUROPEAN Portuguese, not Brazilian like most apps, and differences are considerable • It builds a learning path (vs me using random youtube videos designed for learners) CONS: • the opening lesson creates a sexist situation: a man sees a beautiful woman and so OF COURSE wants to strike a conversation. Why this situation? It sounds like a cheap pickup line. • it doesn’t help that the narrator is a white male who sounds like a 1950s radio host. There is far too much English padding a meager handful of phrases per lesson. Seriously, I don’t need to say Sinhor Sinhora six times to remember the word. I’m new to the language but a lot of this stuff is intuitive. • Because of the excessive English narration you clock, say, 30 minutes of study time and have actual 5-7 minutes of actual learning.

The content is okay not as engaging and robust as I would like for the price .

I deleted the app and my subscription over five years ago. I decided to try it again and I Shokz to find out that the app has barely changed or improved at all. The biggest draw to Pimsleur is that it focuses on speaking and it’s the hands-free learning. People use it while they’re driving or running errands, etc. Aside from listening to the content Voice coach is the best feature however after 5 years of their users requesting AUTO START ANS STOP FOR VOICE COACH THEY STILL HAVENT IMPLEMENTED IT! This is supposed to be hands-free! How has this simple UX improvement still not been implemented?? Barely anything has improved either! So disappointing given that it is probably the most expensive Spanish learning app out there! Where is the money going? Not worth it.

For 10 years, the first lessons in Portuguese and Spanish on Pimsluer are always about a guy trying to pick up a woman in a random place on that country. This is the 21st Century. Why can’t the conversation be something female learners can apply, such as asking directions formally in a train station vs. this weird, creepy guy trying to pick up a female stranger? It’s just so dated and why each time I consider resubscribing, I don’t.

Wish I could write a better review. The program is excellent but BE AWARE THERE IS ONLY ONE LEVEL OF 30 LESSONS! After that it’s over. I’ve tried a few other programs and this is by far the best but in a month (if you’re diligent ) you’ll be done. They currently have no plans to provide more levels of learning so you’ll be great at saying things like “there’s a lot of gas in the car” or “I’ve been here a few weeks” but that’s it.

Get ready to pay an absolutely mind boggling amount monthly, their priority is to extract as much money as possible first, not to help users learn. YIKES!!!
